Seven years ago, I was a shy, insecure teenager with an eating disorder and an extremely negative outlook on life.
My grades were low, I had no friends and my house was a place of constant emotional turmoil. I needed a safe haven to run to, and there wasn’t any. Needed a friend to turn to, to share my fears about life and my dreams of the future with.
I had developed a strange eating disorder where I could not stop gorging on junk food. Food had turned into my biggest emotional pacifier and I turned to it each time I felt bad about myself.
The constant negative self-talk, the feeling of worthlessness slowly dragged me into an abyss of depression.
There was nobody I could talk to about how lonely and sad my life felt.
One night, as I was aimlessly searching the internet for what I could do to rise above my current state, I came across a program called ‘The Ayurveda Experience’.
I had heard of Ayurveda before, but that was for curing physical ailments, right? How could it possibly help me?
As I looked deeper into the program offerings, I could see the author Lisa Coffey talking about curing mental health effectively with the proven, natural way of Ayurveda.
Having tried multiple self-help programs off the internet before, this felt like another program I was going to try and fail at. This program had a lot of good user reviews. There was something interesting and genuine about the way the author spoke, that propelled me to buy this program.
And this, my friends, has been the turning point in my life.
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is an old Indian science which is based on the idea of balancing our energies. Thus, constitutes the human body, resulting in a healthy, joyous and more fulfilling state of being.
The word “Ayurveda” is a Sanskrit term that translates literally into “The Wisdom of Life”.
Ayurveda uses natural techniques to balance out the various imbalances lurking in the human system, and thus help achieve a natural, more in-flow state of existence.
The human body is a microcosm of the universe
The science explains that the human body is comprised of the five elements of nature – Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Space, thus making it a small universe in itself.
It is fundamentally necessary that these elements stay balanced, to serve a fuller and more holistic human experience. Any imbalance in these elements gives rise to ailments both mental and physical in nature.
The three Doshas
These universal elements exist in the human body physically in the form of Doshas.
Doshas are derived from the universal elements and are three in number: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
Vata: Vata constitutes the universal elements of Air and Space.
Pitta: Pitta constitutes the universal elements of Fire and Water.
Kapha: Kapha constitutes the universal elements of Water and Earth.
These Doshas or energies exist in the human body at all times and are constantly influenced and affected by our actions, food choices, thoughts, emotions and any physical and mental influences on us, both externally and internally.
Ayurveda focuses on a holistic way of life, to achieve perfect synchronicity between the mind, body and the spirit, and any physical and mental ailment is a direct result of the imbalance of one or more of these Doshas.
The Ayurveda Experience program
Ayurveda, as a way of living, has been tried and tested by several generations, and I was glad I had found a program to help me live by this science.
I was still not sure if this was a genuine program, as I’ve had the experience of being duped several times with programs such as these, thus robbing me of not only my money but precious time and energy. Though this made me apprehensive, I had to make the choice to try this program out, since something inside me willed me to do it.
My Initial introduction to Ayurveda
My initial introduction to the program was through an introductory video. The author herself explained the basics of Ayurveda and the many benefits of living in accordance with this ancient miracle science.
As I explored more on this program, I came across a free personality test by Coffey. Upon giving the test, I started receiving a series of free lessons to help me better understand my Dosha imbalance.
Along, with this, came free advice on how to better take care of my body and mind through simple tips and techniques.
These email lessons were so intriguing, that I decided to sign up for the course immediately.
Signing up for The Ayurveda Experience
Signing up for the program was a very easy process. I personally preferred the “Digital Only” version of the program, as I wanted to begin immediately.
I received the course in a set of seven modules each module.
A brief summary of every module is below:
Module 1: Ayurveda: The Science Of Life
This module really helped me gain a great perspective on who I am and what makes me the unique person I am. I was able to find my original nature, the perfect proportion of the three doshas to make me feel whole again.
The discovery of my true nature or ‘Prakruti’ as Lisa Coffey called it, helped me so much in understanding what was causing me so much agony in life.
The impediments in my journey were the factors causing an imbalance in my life. This has a special term too and is called ‘Vikruti’. Learning more about my ‘Prakruti’ and ‘Vikruti’ gave me great insight on myself and shed light on the causes of my emotional and physical turmoil.
Module 2: Ayurveda through the Day and through the Years
This module was an absolute eye-opener for me.
It explains in so much detail about the significance of the three Doshas in everyday life, and how introducing certain lifestyle changes in your daily routine, you can more easily tune into your true nature.
In addition to daily routine changes, the ideal diet and activities to be performed at any given time of the day, it also explains beautifully about how one could make changes during different seasons, and at different points of your life to maintain the Dosha harmony.
This greatly helped me to set a perfect daily routine for myself. Following this routine never felt like a chore, because it was so much in tune with my unique nature!
Module 3: Digestion
This module was where my actual healing began. I was a compulsive eater and was never able to stick to a healthy food routine for more than three days.
In this module, Coffey brilliantly explains the need for the inclusion of certain foods into your daily diet routine. Also, she explains why certain foods need to be avoided to help maintain a healthy Dosha balance.
I was finally able to make long-lasting changes to my diet and have begun eating wholesome food, and most importantly, food that feels right to me.
And since I feel so great following this diet, I would never want to go back to my old binge eating ways.
Module 4: Exercise and Body Work
This module got me out of the house as I began to discover the magic of certain exercises really meant for my body type. I was finally able to understand why my exercise routine failed to yield results, and why, even upon strenuous exercising, I was always left feeling lethargic and anxious throughout the day.
The right exercises worked their magic on me right from Day 1, and I feel happier, healthier and more active than ever.
And here is another miraculous health activity shared in this module: The Abhyanga massage.
This is a brilliant and easy-to-do massage technique, which improves blood circulation and stimulates your internal organs to work to their maximum capacity. Following this daily, helped me feel wonderful about my body and health. There are other effective massage techniques too, explained here.
Practice these massage techniques exactly as Coffey teaches them, and you will have a spa-like experience every day!
Module 5: Meditation Techniques
According to my unique Dosha, I was taught a set of meditation techniques and postures, to be performed at specific times in the day.
These meditation techniques are especially suited to match your natural body composition and needs so that the alignment in Doshas is not disturbed.
There are also certain tools called Mala beads, introduced to help enrich the meditation experience.
Apart from all this, this module taught me the importance of Mantras, and how powerful chanting a Mantra could be, provided it is the right one for you.
Module 6: Breath and Energy
This module taught me the importance of breathing, and how breathing right can change your life.
Pranayama is an ancient breathing technique that involves controlled and alternate breathing.
This is a life-changing practice and I follow it every day. This activity put me on the high road to health and long-lasting peace.
Thanks to Pranayama, I feel much healthier and lighter now.
Also, I was taught about the importance of Chakras and Chakra balancing Mantras.learnedrnt how important it is to balance out these chakras in order to live healthily.
Module 7: Ayurvedic Self Care
I used to blame my weight gain on the unhealthy food I had been eating all the while. But Coffey helped me understand the various factors responsible for weight gain, and the reason one diet does not fit everyone.
Following her tips and techniques, I can see my body coming back to form slowly, but steadily.
